Laser Christmas Lights 2019 – Reviews and Buying Guide

Everything you ever needed to know about holiday lighting and Christmas lighting for your home and garden.

Updated Top Pick for 2019 – Clustar’s Xmas Light

I wrote this original writeup two years ago but since that time there have been some pretty awesome upgrades to a lot of these lights. For 2019 I’d definitely recommend Clustar’s Laser Xmas Lights as they are super energy efficient, water and freezerproof and of all the lights we’ve installed, they have the best quality remote. They are also available in three lights: blue, green and red.

What Are Laser Lights?

It’s finally that time of year – Halloween, Christmas, New Year, one of those days when people try to forget how dreary and uneventful the rest of the year is and attempt to sneak in some joy and playfulness. Many choose to put some decorations, dolls, bells, lights and sound effects… some decorations are more intricate than others, but they all share that festive spirit.

How do they Work?

Just like laser pointers or lab lasers. If you’ve ever wondered, LASER stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. This means they make their light by pumping energy (this can be electricity, another light source, or some other source of energy) into what is called “optical gain medium”. This results in exciting the atoms within the medium and emission of light.

What makes lasers stand apart from other sources that radiate light, like fluorescent bulbs, is that their beams are focused using an electric field to control the way it is created and direct all the protons in one direction. This is the “simulated” part of our abbreviation.

However, instead of being immediately emitted, the light thus created keeps bouncing within the cavity between a pair of mirrors on either side, gathering more and more strength with each passing – it becomes amplified. Once the entirety of the medium is producing light, this is what we call saturation. The result is a very powerful and focused beam of light that escapes thanks to the fact that one of the mirrors is only partially reflective.

The light produced by lasers is monochromatic (one color), and it will be contingent on the type of the gain medium, but you can combine a couple or more lasers to get the effect you want.

Christmas Laser Lights 2019 – Review and Guide

There are only a small number of components in a laser, making it fairly simple in design. There are two mirrors at each end of the housing, with the above mentioned medium between them. Depending on the type of the mirrors

Besides this basic configuration, there is the energy source, which, as noted before, could be plain ol’ electricity, another light source, microwaves, or something else. The energy is conveyed into the gain medium using a device called “energy pump”.

Why String Lights Suck and Laser Christmas Lights Rule!

Consider everything you need to do to setup your outdoor lights:

  • Get them from the garage.
  • Untangle the mess of wires and cords
  • Replace the multiple bulbs that are broken
  • Get a ladder
  • Climb up the ladder and hammer in nails into your roof or siding.
  • Hang them up and test if they work.
  • Run the extension cords all around.
  • Pay for all that power.
  • Put them away.

Or you could just… buy a Christmas Laser light.

How to set it up?

  • Buy It
  • Mount It
  • Plug It In
  • Use It

If you’re wondering how the majority of lighting systems look, check out this video below. Keep in mind that every system will vary based on its strength and also the distance you place it.  Generally speaking the better quality the system is the more powerful the light will be.

Take a look at how these lights actually look when setup right

The more difficult question is what to buy, hence the following review section.

Our Top 4 Laser Christmas Lights Review 2019

Here is a list of some of the best laser lights out there. First off let me say I’ve used every one of these or helped install them so I know these guys in and out.

1. Atom Tech Wireless Control Laser Lights (Best Value)

The Atom Tech xmas light is just perfect for people who can’t or won’t hang Christmas lights, either because they don’t have the time or the ability to do it. It’s incredibly simple to install it – all you have to do is decide where you want it, place it accordingly, plug it in, and presto! installed.

Additionally, the light comes with a ground stake which allows for easy positioning.

Atom Tech Lights

Available in multiple colors, durable and cost effective.

The laser is able to display thousands of solid green and red stars combinations, or show them separately. The green light needs some time to warm up (fifteen to twenty minutes), but it gives off a stronger red light. It may not be as bright, but still radiates some charm (if you’d pardon the pun).

Additionally, there’s a blink mode, and the speed is adjustable, as well as a timer that allows you to set it for 2, 4, 6 or 8 hours.

Naturally, it should go without saying by now that you need to avoid direct eye exposure to the beam at all times. The light is fully compliant to FDA standards, but caution is advised.

Moreover, the projector is operated via remote, though the distance is somewhat limited (the specs state 65.5 feet, or 20 meters, but don’t go farther than 20 feet for best results). The projector itself covers an area of about 800 square feet.

As far as specs go, the laser requires an input voltage of 120V, while its output measures 12V/2A. Moreover, it can operate at temperatures ranging from -14.8°F to 89.6°F (-9.6°C to 32°C),

This makes it ideal for not only Christmas and New Year, but also a plethora of other holidays and festivities, like Valentines, St. Patrick’s Day, probably even Halloween and Thanksgiving, not to mention weddings and parties. It’s IP65 waterproof, so it should weather all kinds of conditions outdoors, though you could just as easily set it up indoors.

For your convenience, there is a user manual coming with the product.

2. Ucharge Red and Green 2 Color Outdoor Christmas Laser w/ Remote

KLAREN® RED and Green 2 Color Laser Landscape Projector Light w/ Remote

If you were looking for amazing decorations for your wedding, party, or some holiday celebration, but don’t have the time or strength to string up the conventional lights, you might consider the Ucharge Red and Green 2 Color Laser Landscape Projector Light w/ Remote.

It’s just as exciting as it states on the box.

All jokes aside, though, the laser features two laser colors – green and red, all in one.

Ucharge Red and Green 2 Color Laser Landscape Projector

Two Built in Lights. Timer. Waterproof. Highly Durable.

This doesn’t mean the technology isn’t advanced, it’s just that this particular product has two built-in lasers, one red, the other green. You can use them in conjunction or separately, and in different modes. There’s also a timer that covers the period of six hours.

This model will help you create a sparkling effect on your bushes or trees, making it look like a swarm of magical land complete with red and green fireflies. It’s actually pretty magical.

No more hassle of climbing up and down the later, no more bulbs shorting out, just simple plug it in and use the remote.

There are, in essence, three real options:

  • You could point it at trees and bushes so that it looks like lights have been strung
  • Point it at the grass and make it come alive with sparkles
  • Point it at your house and liven it up with green and red dots all over.

The projector is able to cover a significant area with a thousand points of lights, or flood the entire room for indoor events. Please, note, that if you’re using it outside, you should make sure to not point it at the sky, as it may distract and temporarily blind pilots.

You can decide if that was a joke or not! hehe

Also, do not look directly at it yourself, as it will cause permanent damage to your eye. The product is FDA approved, but why take risks?

The casing is made of durable aluminum and fully waterproof, so it should be able to withstand all sorts of weather conditions outside. Moreover, there are various mounting options included, allowing you increased versatility.

As far as technicalities go, the projector makes use of a standard power supply, and uses less power than a 30W light bulb.

3. Starry Laser Lights Green Moving Laser Projector (Cheapest)

The Starry Laser Lights Green Moving Laser Projector truly lives up to the company’s name, and offers a very different take on Christmas lights than you’re used to. Just put it in the ground, plug it in, point it, and start smiling. That’s it!

The laser looks like something out of the ‘80s, maybe ‘90s sci-fi movies, with sleek, stylish and sturdy all-metal casing. Moreover, it’s completely waterproof, so you can use it throughout the year, and it should withstand all types of weather. Make your weddings and parties all the more magical with this moving laser lighting. Alternatively, it makes a great gift.

Starry Lights Projector

One of the original holiday projectors. Affordable. Great for first time buyers.

Besides the all-metal casing, the module features a strong mounting stake and substantially long power cord (15 feet or about 5 meters). All you have to do is plug it in, and the automatic moving laser lights and internal timer will do the rest.  The lights projects spontaneous patterns that change periodically, while the timer keeps it on for six hours, and then switches off for a 19-hour rest.

The projection area is fairly big, measuring over 200 square feet with the projectors set up about twenty feet from the object illuminated.

The power consumption is incredibly low and cost-effective – the module draws less than 5 Watts. It utilizes a standard 110V power adapter, with added compatibility for 12V power supply.

Out of all the products on this little list, the following would have to be the absolute winner:

4. White Laser Christmas Lights Remote Controllable

Remote Controllable RGB Laser Outdoor Garden Landscape Light Red, Green and Blue

This is the perfect solution for everyone willing to shell out a bit more cash. It’s the most versatile laser lighting out there.

First thing’s first – the Remote Controllable RGB Laser by Ledmall makes for a great indoor and/or outdoor decoration thanks to its robust and waterproof all-metal casing. Moreover, the module comes with a 25 feet long power cord (7.62 meters), making your job of positioning it all the easier.

RGB Laser Outdoor Garden Landscape

Combining three colors the RGB creates a brilliant light show in your garden.

The projector is extremely bright and has ample coverage of over 2000 square feet. You can use it as great decorative lighting for outdoors, putting it on your lawn, pointing at the house, the trees, the shrubbery, or even lugging it out to the park for some special event .

All you have to do is drive a stake into the ground, mount your light, and you’re good to go.

The module features over a thousand green, red and blue light points, allowing you two modes and variations.

You can choose between single green, red or blue, or combine the three, as well as alternate between static and flash. There’s a remote control coming with this unit, allowing you to operate it conveniently from a distance.

Additionally, there is an internal timer that has four settings:

  • 2 Hours
  • 4 Hours
  • 8 Hours

Please, keep in mind that unplugging and then re-plugging the laser resets the timer.

The best thing is that this system is perfectly able on its own to replace hundreds of feet of string lighting and multiple standard landscape lights, and all of this for only a fraction of the power consumption of a standard incandescent light bulb.

A word of warning, as always – the product is FDA approved, and there are some instructions you should abide by – don’t point the light into the sky (unless expressly permitted by the FDA and FCC), and don’t look directly at it to avoid permanent damage to your eyes.

This may be the most expensive item on the list, but you will know where the money went.

Which One Will You Choose?

I know I only recommended three products and the reasoning for that is simple – the majority of Christmas laser light products are absolute garbage.  Generally speaking if you pay for a cheap lighting system that is exactly what you get – cheap light.

The initial investment of $100-150 might seem like a lot especially for a lighting system, but the value and time saved is MORE than worth the price. As I mentioned before my family discovered xmas laser lights 6 years ago and since then we have never one thought again about climbing up a cold slippery ladder to hang up our lights.

If you have any questions about which lights you think work best, send me an email and I’ll help you out.

Some Common Questions about Laser Christmas Lights

How Far Away Should I Install My Projector?

I advise putting the light 25-30 feet away from the house. It also depends on the street lighting and size of our house. If there is more street lighting you’ll want to put your laser light a lot closer.  Putting it too far away can cause a dilute light affect that you won’t want.

Is a single laser projector enough for a single story house?

Like I mentioned earlier 25-30 feet is more than enough space for your projector. Each projector can cover roughly 625 square feet of space.  So if you have a single story home it will be more than enough, you’ll even get some of the snowflakes or star shower affects on your roof.

Are laser lights ok for a two story house?

Definitely. That being said I would look into buying more than one for different angles of the house. For example of your house has a lot of street lighting or already existing garden lights I would suggest going for 2 lights instead of just one. Also keep in mind corners will need another light as well.

Is the power connector for the laser lights wateproof?

All connectors are waterproof. This means they are safe from water, rain or snow.  Most light systems come with extremely high quality sealing to protect the entire unit.

Do They Shine on Wood?

Yes, they do. Regardless of the surface, laser lights will do a good job illuminating the entire area without any issues. I’ve had mine point towards a large shed we keep in the backyard without any issues at all.

Are Laser Xmas Lights Safe to Use?

As with any laser, you need to be careful that you don’t let the light shine directly into your eyes. As for them cashing airplane crashes or blinding pilots at night that is utter nonsense. The range of these lights is only 40-50 feet at best and there are nowhere near the power required to actually blind someone far away.

Is there a Timer?

Yes, all the units we reviewed have a time that is great for setting up your lighting and forgetting about it. I usually set mine for about 7-8 hours so by the time I wake up in the morning it’s done and good to go.

Will These Work on a White House?

The answer is yes, they will. Regardless of the house or the material of the home they will work extremely effectively in keeping your home well light up. Which makes me wonder, who has an all black house. 😉

Can I Use Them on my Balcony?

The only issue with balconies is the distance. The light needs to be put at least 25-30 feet away for it to be effective. Without that distance you’re not going to be getting the same affect. Anything closer will also be a little bit dangerous and can shine into you eyes. If you could angle the light from the ground floor up than it should be ok.

Can You Hang Them on a Tree?

If you get the right angle down than yes you could. However they would need to be fastened to something otherwise the light will end up moving around.  I would suggest putting them at an angle?

What is the Best Place to Put Your Laser Light?

I would opt for ground level at a 45 degree angle about 25-35 feet away from your house. You can adjust for power depending on the laser. Each surface of the house should get one light as well.

How Can I Avoid Theft of My Light?

By moving to a good neighborhood.

In all honesty, there is not much you can do to stop someone from stealing your laser light but than again if someone wanted to they could steal anything sitting out on your lawn. These units are fairly cheap and Christmas is a pretty sacred time, we have yet to hear of anyone actually having their lights stolen.

Are These Lights White or Multi Color?

While you can find more white ones in our white lights specific review or on our snowflake projectors, I would say that the best quality lights are the green and red variety which can easily be purchased anywhere. All of the products we reviewed come with Red, Green and Blue lights.

How Many Watts Does Each Projector Use?

These lights are designed to be both economically and environmentally minded. On average they use 0.0005 watts of power which means you could run about 50 laser lights with the average consumption of a home light bulb.

What Temperature are the Lights?

Made for outdoor use. It is waterproof and designed to operate -17F to 100F (-28 to +38 degrees Celsius).

Is There a Warranty on These Products?

Depends on the manufacturer but with Amazon you have at least two months of warranty before the product is returned, so the answer is yes.

What Kind of Power Cord Does it Use?

Just use the typical 3 prong power cord and you won’t have any problems with the setup. Also run an extension cord to help connect the lights together.

Do the Lights Twinkle or Move?

I would check the Amazon page for more information about which lights move and which don’t. I think there is a a preference for lights that move slightly but aren’t jumping around all over the place. If you spend a little bit more money you’ll definitely get the lights that can twinkle.

Will These Blind Pilots?

Absolutely not, don’t be silly.

Worried About Installation?

It’s important to remember that these lighting systems are basically landscape lights, to learn how to install them check these:
